Do you have an eye for spotting patterns, or an intrigue for lush textures?  Patterns and textures are all around if we open our eyes and minds to them.  Consider the bark of a tree, or the formation of strata in a mountainous setting-the colors, the patterns, the texture all fits together in an imperfectly perfect way.  Walk through a store and you will find a myriad of patterns in clothing or textiles that jump out and capture your eye. Perhaps you are drawn to lettering and find graphics in a book or letterpress fascinating.  Looked at individually, these patterns and textures may not tell a story, but you as an artist with little more than instinct can breathe life into the unrelated and create stories through collage, color, paint and abstraction.    During this fun filled course, students will be working with paint, creating prints, and embellishing papers & more before assembling into colorful, pattern filled collage(s).

Supplies Student Should Bring:

2 wood surfaces primed with black or white gesso, size 10x10 or 12 x 12

Assorted paint brushes for acrylic paint.  You won’t need large brushes but a small selection of flat and round will be fine.  I enjoy working with the Mimik Hog or Princeton Catalyst Brushes.

1 brayer

3-4 colors of your favorite soft or fluid acrylic paint.  The instructor will provide several paint colors to mix with (white, titanium buff, black, quin gold, and a few other colors), so just bring colors you want to use in your collages.  A good idea is to work with complementary colors or analogous colors for a cohesive look.

While we will be making quite a few papers in the workshop, if you have a selection of gelli print papers, or other collage material you want to incorporate, feel free to bring a small selection of your favorites.

Typical painting/mixed media tools:  water basin, palette, palette paper, scissors, apron.

You will be supplied with a paper pack and papers to create collage papers with during the course.  All mediums will be supplied including gel medium, glazing medium and matte medium.  The instructor will also provide a small assortment of paint to mix with your favorite colors. We will be using soft body, fluid, and high flow paint.  Stencils, mark making tools, drawing tools will also be provided. If you have any stencils you can’t live without, feel free to bring a few along.

To save time in class, please remember to gesso your panel or buy a pre-gessoed WOOD surface such as a DaVinci Ultra Smooth gesso panel.
