Over the last 6 or 7 years of working with Yupo paper, I have become increasingly enamored with the mystical qualities this unique surface offers artists.  During this introduction to Abstracts on Yupo Paper, we will review several of the fun mark making techniques that help create the basis of our multi-layered pieces on this unique surface.  By the end of the workshop, students will have 2 colorful abstract paintings (landscape and or geo-abstracts).

Students will learn:

About using this unique surface and the best paints to use when creating with Yupo paper.

Mark Making Techniques on Yupo.

How to create interesting backgrounds composed of translucent and opaque layers of acrylic paint using Golden’s High Flow acrylics.

A variety of tips and strategies for having a well composed abstract painting.

Tips on finishing, sealing and displaying work on Yupo paper

Students should bring a few brayers (hard/soft; large/small) along with a couple of small to med brushes.

For this process, the Polar-Flo 700m is a great set although I’d have a couple of flats as well.   The 8 pack 700 Series is more than you need but a great value:  https://www.jerrysartarama.com/polar-flo-watercolor-brush-sets

1 Jerry’s Jumbo Jet Pencil in Black or a black china ‘marker’:  https://www.jerrysartarama.com/jerry-s-jumbo-jet-charcoal-pencils

1-2 Fineline Applicator (20 gauge) filled with Black or White Fluid acrylic.  I use Golden.   https://www.jerrysartarama.com/david-ford-fineline-applicators

Palette paper, water container, paper towels, baby wipes.

Helpful to bring along:  apron and gloves.

1 pad of 11x14 white Yupo paper (any weight is fine but I prefer the heavier weight)

Golden’s High Flow Paint:  Carbon Black, Titanium White, Titan Buff, Quin Gold, Shading Gray and 2-3 other colors.  I especially love Napthol Red, Teal, Quin Magenta, Green Gold—but choose colors you love.

1 white Caran D’ache Watersoluble Crayon. (other colors are fine too if you have them)

1 Spray bottle filled with water and a fine mister bottle filled with rubbing alcohol.

Assorted stencils (those with larger shapes, numbers and letters work best rather than small intricate designs).  Other mark making tools-bottle caps, skewers or tooth picks, fan brush.

Baby Wipes, paper towels, 2-3 make up sponges, optional hand sanitizer.

Optional- small bottle of Golden Fluid Titanium White acrylic paint.

Light tack painter’s tape (optional but recommended if you want a frame around your paintings)

A few assorted paint brushes for more controlled and detail work.
