Learn techniques which utilize the best attributes of both watercolor pencils and traditional

colored pencils to create beautiful works of art efficiently while unleashing the expressive intent of the individual artist.

Students will spend the morning with Winsor & Newton Studio Collection watercolour pencils

creating a beautiful underpainting and background. Creating a watercolor pencil underpainting

and background is a quick, exciting, and enjoyable way to get color and texture onto the paper.

Kate will demonstrate the process as well as useful watercolor pencil techniques.

In the afternoon session, students will work with Winsor & Newton Studio Collection colour

pencils adding additional details and layers refining their pieces. Kate will demonstrate the

process as well as helpful colored pencil techniques.

Kate will provide individual help as needed during student work time. Information handouts will

be delivered to students through email after the workshop to help them complete the project and further their skills at home. Printed drawings and photos will be provided in class.

Kate will provide for each student:

A drawing of the subject matter

A photo of the subject matter

Or you can bring your own photo and drawing

Supplies for the students to bring to the workshop:

1 Sheet of Graphite Paper and Painters Tape  (for transferring the drawing)

A # 2 pencil and an eraser - I use pencil topper erasers often found in school supplies and the Tombow Mono Zero eraser.  Bring the eraser you prefer.

A Drawing Stump size #4 - #6 for blending

A Small Handheld Pencil Sharpener and/or a Battery Powered Pencil Sharpener (very handy at your work space).  A helical blade is preferred in my powered sharpeners.

A small metal strainer or a sanding block or a piece of medium grit sandpaper (such as 60 or 80 grit).  We will use these for a specific watercolor pencil texture technique (you only need one of the 3).

Watercolor brushes approximately size # 4 and size # 8, bring what you have.

A water container or cup

An old towel or washcloth (used to control the water on your brush)

Paper towels

What will be provided to each student:
