Time: Friday, November 15, 2019 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Create more with less in your landscapes paintings and join Michael for this 3-hour workshop as he demonstrates the key to creating dramatic paintings using limited color with charcoal and pastel. Michael will provide you with the paper to work on that he will bring to class. He will also provide you with the photo reference of the image you will be working on and will paint together with you on that same image. You will start the drawing in charcoal, then apply workable fixative after the basic drawing is blocked in. Starting with the shadow colors, you will begin to lay in a first layer of pastel color on top of your drawing. Then progressing from dark to light, you will build final layers of neutral color to the successful completion of your monochromatic painting.

Michael will paint alongside you, demonstrating all his limited color working methods into a step-by-step process. Creating dramatic paintings using limited color with charcoal & pastel will help you set your work apart!

Drawing Materials:

Box/Soft Vine Charcoal, (medium thickness), Kneaded Eraser,

Pastels:

If you already work in pastel and have a complete set, bring that. If you haven't previously worked in pastel, bring to class a black stick, a white stick, and 15-20 additional assorted warm and cool grays. Some off white and light grays, and some dark grays.

Try and include some sticks that lean toward green/gray, blue/gray and purple gray. Bring soft pastels, not hard sticks. No oil pastels.

Any of these pastel choices will be fine: Holbein, Rembrandt, Schmincke, Sennelier, Terry Ludwig, Unison

Our goal is to create a blending of subtle neutral colors on top of our base charcoal drawing.

Working Surface:

Paper will be provided for you by your instructor, Michael Story

Easel:

Good quality small tabletop easel will work fine on work tables.

Bring a piece of heavy poster board or cardboard as a firm backing for your easel to work on

Miscellaneous Materials:

Tackle Box or Art Bin Box to hold supplies, Single Edge Razor Blades, Roll of Masking Tape, 1 Can Workable Fixative, Paper Towels or Rags
