Living in Colorado, I am always inspired by rock formations in the Rocky Mountains.  Let me show you several sources of inspiration for your own geologic abstract paintings.  Your assignment:  Look down!  You can find amazing patterns for geologic abstracts in cracked sidewalks and driveways.  Take photos of interesting patterns and bring your favorites to class.  Let me show you how to develop these photos into beautiful textured abstract paintings.  To reduce drying time, we will paint on watercolor paper, and mount our paintings on cradled wood panels.  I will bring additional reference photos.

Materials included:  Molding paste and texture compounds, air dry clay, rocks, pebbles, mirror glass, sand, shells, Golden Fluid Acrylics and Polymer medium to share, instructional handouts.

Supply list for students to bring:

Golden Fluid Acrylics (or use shared Golden shared paints)

1 or 2 cradled wood panels – 10x10 or 9x12 ONLY!  We will mount our paintings on wood panels for a beautiful finished look.  Important: PLEASE GESSO PANELS BEFORE CLASS.

Several 11x14 sheets of 140 lb cold press watercolor paper – Jerry’s has Strathmore packs of 6 available.  We will crop and trim the paper to fit our boards.  98 lb Canson Mixed Media Paper is also good.

Golden Regular Gel medium, gloss or matte

Short Handled Nylon Brushes (3/4 inch flat, #6, and #2) suitable for w/c and acrylic

Spray water bottle, paper towels, palette, small palette knife, scissors, pencil, ruler, soft eraser, large 32 oz water container.
