Color! Clean color with greater impact. Fill your room with fresh flowers or fill your walls with floral paintings. Mini demos in the morning cover basics on color theory, values, edges, and design with great lighting. The classroom will have a set up so you may work from life. There will also be beautiful photos both from the garden and from studio set ups which you may use - or you may bring your own. The instructor will spend time with each student, and the class with be taught to the level of the students participating. There will be some pass out sheets.

Materials:

Bring what you are already comfortable using. Colors are adaptable, brushes should be very clean and in relatively good shape, and your mixing surface must be very clean before we begin mixing colors on it. Please do not bring any turpentine, mineral spirits, or other liquids with heavy fumes. I will have something you can use for both painting and brush cleaning at the end of the sessions. For those who need some materials, look at the suggested list below and talk with the vendors. If you have questions, call me!

Grounds:

You may work on your preference of linen, cotton, or gesso board.  You may wish to paint along with the mini demos on individual 8x10 surfaces.  Some people use one larger, divided up surface to do multiple images on for the morning session. Then have one 11 x 14, or 16 x 20 for the three-hour afternoon painting.

Brushes: I use a combination of hog hair, medium stiff filberts and soft sable or synthetic rounds and flats. Sizes, of course, depend on the size of your canvas or board.  If you are working on an 8x10, stick with much smaller sizes than if you are working on an 16x20.

Palette: Please bring a big enough surface to really mix colors. That means no 5x7 palettes to work on a 16x20 painting!  You need elbow room and lots of square inches of surface space to mix on.  Look at the palettes that are made in a neutral grey color – they help you mix accurate colors before you take them to the painting.  Also, if you prefer ease of clean up, consider the grey disposable, paper palettes – very helpful.

Oils - Colors: Try to bring a basic palette, such as:

Titanium White

Cadmium Yellow Light

Cadmium Orange

Yellow Ochre

Burnt Sienna

Cadmium Red

Alizarin Crimson

Cobalt Blue

Ultramarine Blue

Sap Green (very dark)

Ivory Black

Extras:

- Sketch book, charcoal, dark sketch pencil, kneadable eraser – for notes and sketches

- Table easel, if you can borrow one

- Paper towels for brushes (Baby wipes for hands!  OR a water moistened, terry washcloth in ziplock bag with a drop or two of olive oil, coconut oil, vitamin e oil – anything you have at home)

- Palette cups (metal, with or without caps, that clip onto palette preventing spillage) or small, short plastic cups like those 1 to 2 oz. used for condiments.

- Palette knife for mixing – small to medium size blade.
